Goodbye Sundae

Know what this blog has been good for? Writing about everything with no clear direction. I have given myself and others whiplash with all of the different things I tried to do, which is why I've decided I need a fresh start. I'll leave this blog here for the times when I feel like I need a reminder to get back on track. Plus, you never really delete your first blog, do you?*** I have more energy to write these days but there is no focus around here and it's overwhelming. When I find a place I can focus, I'll write. Until then, here are the high-lights:

My Proposal Story

Who likes Apple Pie?

Guinness Cottage Pie

For now I'll keep up with Hello Sundae on the twitters and the IGs. I changed it all back after my "identity crisis" was over, but I still fell restless and I feel like the silly screen name is just another chapter in the book, you know? Anyhoo, goodbye-not-goodbye.

***Actually, I did delete my first blog and I wish I hadn't. I wrote during a really hard time in my life and deleted it for fear that the person abusing me would find it. Looking back, I feel like pressing delete was cowardly and I should have left it for others to learn from my experience. No matter how bad I feel about deleting the blog though, I can't beat myself up for it because I have been abused enough for one life time.

Blog's still dead.

I just popped by because I had a few thoughts, but I'm not sure I want to post yet because my blog isn't pretty. I took away the old elements and posted a photo. Sure the photo is coming up on it's 1st birthday, but I was comfortable when I took it. I'm holding one of my babies and a glass of wine. There is a basket of laundry and crappy holiday decorations in the background. Homey, huh? That's really it for now. I'll look at this blog again later and decide if I'm ready to be serious.

Hey guys

This blog is a little dead and neglected, isn't it? I think I'm ready to come back. A lot hasn't happened, so there really is nothing to catch up on. Maybe a few things here and there but I'll get to those as I think of them.

Chris and I are making plans for our 1st wedding anniversary (in 1 week), so there's that.

I took a 3 week break from drinking. My liver has finished respawning (I think/hope).

Yes, I had a minor identity crisis on the twitters and IGs. I'm hello sundae again. I don't really remember why I picked this name anymore and I can't really find another one that feels like "me," so there it is. I should change my screen names to Ribbon Dancer or Cider Gal or Machine Gun Jenny. I like the last one.

In reality, I have been dealing with an existential crisis. Who isn't?! HA! But really. I'm still looking for a path in a dense forest. I see bits of light, but none bright enough to guide the way.

With that said, I don't really have a direction for this blog either. I never really did, I just tried to be everything and I didn't like anything I was doing. I like to just write, I guess. Reading a few posts back, I liked the ones where I just wrote about my day.

Speaking of days, have you been to an Old Navy for $1 flip-flop day? I was the closing manager that day. It was non-stop nuts! A dollar for flip-flops is a deal, but not for the ones we sell. Maybe the ones from 7 or 8 years ago, but not the ones we carry now.

Old vs New

Old- wider soles, wider/flexible straps, and smooth sole.
New- narrow sole, skinny/rigid straps, and a bumpy weird sole.

Another thing? Not as important because it has nothing to do with comfort, but the brown flippy is a size 7, the green one is a size 6. The only difference in the size/shape is that the green one has a rounded toe and the brown one... well look at the photo. The brown one's big toe part is about a 1/4 inch longer than the green one. That 1/4 inch would only be necessary if you have an extra long big toe.

sheesh.

Pay no mind to the state of the green flippy. It's ancient. 10 years is a long life for a pair of flip-flops. 10 years and still kickin!

One thing that hasn't changed? The "new flip-flop" smell. I love it. When asked during my interview 2 years ago why I wanted to come back to the company my answer was, "I miss the sweet smell of new flip-flops, fresh from the box." My interviewer was surprised/disgusted/frightened and I think she moved to Cali a month later because I was too insane to work with.

Tangent Alllllllllert! I clearly have strong feelings for flip-flops. Being a Floridian it isn't really that odd.

That's quite enough babble for now.

Almost a week later...

I made it! I made it through Black Friday and I am alive! Generally, I work later on in the day on Black Friday, when all the crazies are sleeping. This was my first time ever working in the AM hours when the store first opens.

Yes. I barfed.

Not gonna lie, I had an anxiety attack in the bathroom after watching people run into the mall from the safety of the second floor of my store.

After I shakily emerged from the bathroom, I was surprised at how nice the customers that I came in contact with were. I don't particularly want to dwell on the negatives because we would all have flashbacks.

I was only in the store for 2 hours after it opened because the rest of my shift was spent working the previous evening on Thanksgiving... putting up the sale signs for the crazies. I spent those two hours walking around helping customers while twisting, stretching, and wrapping a flannel scarf around my hands.

I should have bought that scarf, I think it may be lucky.

All in all it went well, but next year there will be whiskey. I mean  gooooood whiskey.

November already?

Here we go, it's been over a month. Over half of that time was spent without a laptop charger. No laptop means no blogging. I'm not a fan of blogging from my phone and I kept getting error codes on the iPad.

These excuses stink.

As soon as I realized that one of my wee beasties devoured my laptop cord, dozens of post ideas flooded my brain. I even started dreaming vividly again.... book writing vividly. My book files are only saved on my laptop. I think my brain is telling me that my mind races faster and more creatively without the internet killing off brain cells before they have become useful. Thank goodness I don't have a facebook! I think my brain cells would go even faster...

Not much has happened over the last month. Work has gotten busier, which is good. More customers equal more hours to give associates equals more people on the sales floor. Think of that next time you're in a store and can't find anyone to help you. If business is sucking, everyone suffers. I overheard a woman bitching about the size of the line at work last night. Her solution? "They need to hire more people!" There were 3 registers open and only 2 people in the actual line ahead of the grouchy customer. End work rant.

Sometimes I really wish I could live tweet a typical shift at work.

Also, my blog looks like crap. I can finally work on that now. I have the entire weekend off work.
Happy Veteran's Day to me.

Obsessed Woman

Last post? About my hair. Half of my tweets over the last 2 months? My hair. Instagram? My dog and my hair.

You know, the more I look at it, the more frustrated I get. I had it cut on a Wednesday and went back in the following day to have the cut fixed. Looking back, I was an idiot. I shouldn't have had to go back a second time. I also probably should not have gone back to the same person. What part of "short pixie" was I unclear about? I even had photos! Sure, my hair has never been this short, but that doesn't mean I need to look like Kris Jenner/ Willem Defoe while I'm deciding if short is for me. I'm pretty sure I decided what I wanted before walking into the salon.

My hair is difficult to style at this awkward-ass length! I want my hair to be cute and actually look like a pixie, like this little lady right here. I found her how-to-style video on youtube and I just can't wait to have my mop fixed. Until then, I'm just googling away at ways to do my hair in the morning so it doesn't look like I have an old lady-too-blind-to-see-her-terrible-hair hair cut.

Fickle Pixie

So far, it seems as though I have only been writing every two weeks or so. I'd like to change that. I'd like to say that I will write more, but I am fickle as hell.

Recently I've been writing about my day to day, and since I haven't missed a day being alive, I really have no excuse for not writing something at least every other day for each day I am breathing. Still following along? Here is the most recent of my adventures:

I am a cutter. A hair cutter, that is. Over the last eight or nine years, as soon as the going gets tough, I get to cutting..... my hair. The first few times I went to a salon. I played it safe with a shoulder length, layered cut. I felt free! As free as my hair as Gaga would say.

My second semester at USF (Jan. '11) I got a little ballsy. One night after watching Cabaret I found myself in the bathroom with scissors gettin' my Liza on. I hacked off my own long hair! Long, like past my shoulder blades, long. I wanted to cut off more! For the next few days after Chris helped me even out the super blunt bob I gave myself, I had this incredibly strong urge to dig out the clippers and get my Britney on. I was stressed, depressed, and I started gaining the "Freshman 15" in my junior year of college.

Since then, I've been trimming, snipping, and secretly (not so secret anymore, huh Jonesy?) cutting my own hair. I have avoided the salon chair because I have been too stressed to entrust another person with the one thing in my life that I have felt in control of for the last few years. I always tell the story of when my little brother angrily shaved his eye brows off after being stung by a cat fish (we're a bunch of crazies in my family) and how we were worried about what he'd save off after being hit by a car on his bicycle two weeks later.

I have come to the realization that (hair)cutting must run in my family.

Now before any of you "professionals" start in on me about why I should not cut MY own hair, let me just stop you in your tracks. Italics mean business, Did you seeeeee them? My own hair. I grow it, wash it, brush, and style it the best I can. I can cut it if I want to. Sure you may do a better job at the end of the day, but if you're also any better at doing dishes than the average Joe, than I have a sink full of them for you. Email me for my home address. Besides, it's not like I'm trying to remove my own appendix.

So without further ado, I have come here to say that I sat in a salon chair. I wanted my hair gone, but not Crazy Britney gone (I love you Brit). I walked out of there with a longish pixie cut. I'm not entirely happy with it, but I'm feeling confident enough to go to a more competent hair dresser to have it cut the way I envision it.

PS Stano cut his hair off after being scraped off the side of the road, but very badly. He tried to give himself a mohawk, but it was so bad he wouldn't come out of the bathroom. His mother called and asked me to come over and talk to him. He let me in the bathroom and I "fixed it" and he felt better. He ended the day with a blue mohawk, perched on the right side of his noggin.

Sniff, Light, Snuff, and Repeat

Lately, I've had so many things to say, but no clear way of getting my point across. Some things are political in theme. I've mentioned before that I don't like to get political on the blog, or anywhere else for that matter unless there's tequila involved, in which case I am an excellent debate opponent. On that note, don't we all know our shit when we're even the slightest bit cocked off our arses? (I've recently decided to stop censoring my language around here. I have a filthy mouth, no apologies). Other themes include extreme feelings of gratitude for the hand I have drawn as of late as well as rants about the things that have gone terribly wrong.

I'd also just love to ramble all day long about the jackass customers who come into my store on an hourly basis, but then this would start to look like a tumblr blog, and I, the author, will have given birth to a new meme. Not my style.

Instead of all these topics (the political one is coming, you've been forewarned) can we just talk about candles? As in the dream-scented autumn-y candles from Bath and Body Works? I am a sucker for the warm, cozy, yet slightly masculine scents they release every year for the return of the Great Pumpkin. One of my favorites that I still have from last year is Fireside. Marshmallow Fireside and Fresh Balsam will always be favorites; I burned quite a few of those last year as well.

Well, I had a super awesome coupon for BBW that was burning a hole in my wallet so I cashed it in yesterday on my lunch break for a few goodies. I will savor, borderline hoard, every last drop of wax that I carried over the threshold of my home. I sniffed my way through the store and wound up with Leaves, White Barn Nutmeg & Spice, Black Pepper Bergamot, and Mahogany Teakwood.

What are some of your favorites? Do you have a seasonal ones that you  stock up on to burn year-round?

Trying to be patient...

but it's tough! Two weeks. 14 days.... until Autumn. I cannot wait. Fall is my favorite season for several reasons and surprisingly my birthday is not the most important reason. While my birthday does fall on the eve of the best holiday of the year (ahem, Halloween), my favorite parts of the season is are as follows: the colors, the weather, the fashion, the treats, pumpkin spice lattés, the changes in nature, the giant shipments of fleece that will soon plague my workplace, pumpkin beer, the lack of side eyes at my year-round lust for pumpkin pie, pumpkin candles.... starting to see a trend?

I'm not one of those people suddenly into pumpkin stuff in the last 2 years because of it's popular on twitter and instagram. I think it's cute to watch the trends fly by.... some of them I will admit to buying into while others have been in my back pocket since I was little. Side tracked... this post is tagged as "free write" so I suppose it's ok.

Back to pumpkins.

I like to carve pumpkins on my birthday. It's sort of a tradition I started for myself as an adult. After having years of shitty birthdays growing up I decided that if I had to get old, I may as well start liking the day it happens. I'm still trying to decide what I want to carve into my pumpkin this year, but I guess there's still time.

I've also been thinking lately that because I live in Florida, I'm being cheated out of all that Autumn has to offer. I would love for the palm trees to change colors! I do love that I can grab a coffee with my sweety, bundle up and head out to the beach to watch the sunset. The breeze off the gulf is extra crisp in the fall and winter months.

Did I mention that I love how the upcoming season gives me an excuse to wear boots everyday?

The sun sets on another year...

Last night Chris and I headed out to the beach, coffees and cake pops in tow, to watch the last sunset of his 20's.
I don't know if it's the smell of the salty air that I love so much, or the fact that everyone looks so damn good in the glowing sunlight, but I think I fell for him a little more.
The weather was perfect. Balmy, but not enough to remember that it was August in Florida. It was breezy, but not enough that my long, red hair was blown around into what could have been a seagull's nest.
I suppose if I were turning 30, last night would have been a pretty good last hurrah. Well, maybe if there had been champagne.... but I'm not turning 30 and he's not crazy about champagne.

Tonight I'm taking him out to dinner and I'm going to do my best to be, well... I don't know. I guess, sensitive? My 30th will also be my golden birthday, therefore, I'm sure I will be in the mood to party for a week. How am I going to be sensitive? Well, for starters I'm going to wear heels and I'm not going to wear lipstick...
Happy Birthday, Darling.

Lazy Hump Day

Here I am, a day off work and no motivation to get anything done. I have laundry to put away and groceries to buy. Instead, I'm watching Buffy.

I did get something done today. I wasted 6 cups of flour.

I thought: hey, I'll bake bread! Ya know, try out the dough hook on the stand mixer. I mixed the dough, put it in a bowl, and let it take a break in a nice warm spot. One hour later? The bread dough did not rise!!! My yeast had expired. So, my question is, should I buy another jar of yeast of just buy the packets? I can see myself baking bread more often, now that the stand mixer is around to knead the dough for me. On the other hand, I know that I say I'll starting "_______ing" more now that I have an awesome "______" and then I never do.
I still put that wimpy bread dough in the oven. It came out dense and chewy. It's still kinda tasty and it made the house smell nice.

Sadie, Married Lady

Whelp, I am alive and well. Married, but alive! Ha! But really, 4 really amazing events have happened in the last 6 months and I think it's time for a recap.

February----> I asked a man to marry me and he said yes!

May---------> I graduated college! My Bachelor's in English, cum laude! I received my diploma about a month ago. Chris and I had a whiskey toast by the mailbox. Finishing college was definitely a shining moment in my life.

July--------> The very last day in July I was finally given the promotion at work that I have been working my ass off for. A nice little raise and benefits? I'll take it, but don't think for a minute I haven't learned a thing from Rebecca Sharp (Vanity Fair). I'm just going to keep on smiling, charming, and working my way to the top!

August------> I swapped rings with Chris! I'd like to post a little more on the wedding later and a few photos, but I'm still learning to manage my time. I'm still getting used to being out of the house 40 hours a week.

I have 2 days in a row off work this week, so I'm hoping to work on ways to manage my time. You know, juggling housewife-ry, work, and an internet presence. Until next time, stay classy!

Shop My Closet

Coming Soon: Shop my closet! I used the name of one of my test blogs to open a shop specifically for clothes that I don't wear anymore.....

I can now fit into clothes that I haven't worn in years, but my taste has evolved so there are some items that I'm ready to part with. I have also listed a few things that are too big for me. There are some things that will always be too little for me and I have no idea when I ever fit into them! There's nothing terribly fancy (Modcloth, Jcrew, etc) because I'm not a terribly fancy person! I have yet to take pictures of anything, but it's all listed and ready to go. I think I'm going to beg Chris to help me with photos.

Hopefully soon I'll have a few more bottoms to list, that is, when my bottom gets smaller. teehee!

So, that's that!

Oops, I did it again

Well, here I am, blogging in bed with a very swollen and bruised ankle. Trinket is at my side, slowly low crawling onto my chest as I type.... I just pushed her off because I couldn't see anymore! Onto the post...

Let's start this story at the beginning.

Monday. "There should be a holiday dedicated to all the brave people that show up to work on a Monday." @Carrie_Br4dshaw (Twitter).

I sprained my ankle Monday morning at work. I was getting a shelf down off its bracket (overhead) when I heard a face-out arm sliding on the shelf. I was wearing flip-flops so I had to do that funny dance to avoid having the face-out fall on my foot. Well, my funny dance was a little much and I lost my footing. I rolled my ankle and fell right on my ass, 4ft shelf still in hand over my head. The face-out crashed onto the floor just inches from my feet. I hollered and I immediately had to make myself laugh to keep from crying. I yelled lots of effs and ess's (the store wasn't open), which always help dull the pain.

I'm not blaming the flip-flops here. I'm irritated at the jackass who left the fixture on the shelf, out of sight. Had I known what I would be doing that morning I would've worn sneakers, but I was told I'd be changing the modelkins (not very hazardous).

I got up and walked it off a little, the swelling coming and going for the next 3 1/2 hours of my shift.

Stupid.
I sprain my ankles often, no matter what shoes I'm wearing. It's just irritating.
Friday. Oops, I did it again.

Well, not exactly. No rolling this time. I was getting a few shelves out of the fixture room to take upstairs with me and I fumbled as I was getting one down off the shelf they are stored on (shelves kept on a shelf? Just take my word for it). Two shelves came crashing down, right into my poor little abused ankle, the one I effed up on Monday. Let me just say that our shelves at work are heavy. I would say a good 10 lbs each. I feel lucky that nothing was broken!

Anyhoo, I immediately yelled some gd's (then apologized because some people take offense), but continued with the effs, ess's, and I muttered some others that would rile up a room full of women. My manager was there and asked if I wanted to file an accident report just as I began to laugh maniacally to keep from sobbing.

I seriously entertained the idea of going home at that point.

Stupid.
I said, let me see if I can walk it off. I worked another 6 hours.
Stupid.

For the rest of the day I flinched at every fixture I touched.

The funny thing about all of this? I haven't learned a damn thing.

Have a safe weekend!

Basin --A Teensy Review

Last weekend I went to Magic Kingdom with my nephew. It was his first time and he is 5. He had tons of fun and professed his love for Uncle Chris and Aunt Jenny on the car ride home with his Mommy, my sister. After the park that night I was also able to pop into Basin, a bath and body store at Downtown Disney. I'd walked past it so many times, but lately I have been in too much of a rush to get somewhere that I don't have time to stop in. You see, I don't go to Downtown Disney to mosey around like most, as a park passholder, I only go there when I need something specific. For example, I went on Saturday night because I was getting Mickey ears embroidered for my nephew. We forgot to get them at the park earlier and he really wanted them. After getting his ears, I stopped in Basin for a look around.

Basin, like Lush is one of those stores you can smell half a mile away. Basin is much bigger than any of the Lush stores I've been in though, but it carries the same sort of items. Chemical and paraben-free and no animal testing. I'm in. They had mounds of bath bombs and cakes of soap. I was attracted to the shampoo bars, the pumpkin one to be exact. Their products are competitively priced with Lush, being a little cheaper.

I picked up a few bath bombs as well. I have already used the shampoo and it is wonderful. It lathers surprisingly well for a solid shampoo. I also used one of the bath bombs yesterday after my unsurprisingly shitty day at work. It was super fizzy and fragrant. As some may know, Trinket does not let me take baths in peace. She cries and whines until I put her in the water, too. Today Trinket's fur still smells like the Vanilla Oak bomb I used (teehee).

This post is by no means, a comparison between Lush and Basin. I'm simply using Lush as an example because most people are familiar with it.

I plan on sticking my head in this shop again! Also, Happy Independence Day!

Wedding Crazies

Well, with the wedding only a month and a half away my nerves are going berserk. That's normal and I know it, but you know what's driving me the craziest? The whole RSVP thing.

I understand that we will have only had a 6 month engagement, but we still sent out the invites as if it were a 1 year engagement. We pared down our guest list fairly easily, designed the invites, and mailed them out. We asked our guests to RSVP by a specific date, but I feel like we should have asked them to pipe up sooner. Or maybe I'm just worried that we won't have enough time to secure the things we need for our day that are contingent upon guest numbers (food, seating, etc). The invites have been out for 2 weeks now and I thought for sure we would have heard from more of our friends sooner.

I'm sure I can pull it all off, but I just thought.... Well. Sigh.

Anyway. I found this on Pinterest. I'd love to do it and if I use different color balloons, it would tie back into the way I proposed!

Hi, there

It's been awhile, hasn't it? I thought I would have more time for blogging after graduation, and I have, it's just that I have found that I have nothing to write. I have plenty to say, but nothing to write.  I could go through the last few weeks and update everyone but that's boring (to me), I could post some of the instagram photos from my feed, or I could do both but that's such a cop-out and I don't want to use my instagram account and the photos of my day-to-day from it as a crutch. "I can't think of anything to write, so here, look at my clever iPhone photos with retro filters!" Sure, I've done similar posts in the past but that was when I didn't have any time in my pocket. I could continue to write all day about how I have nothing to write, but I won't.

I have writer's block.

That's ok, for now. I bought a really useful book at Anthropologie last week that's giving my pencil a workout.

I'm planning a wedding, a wedding that is sneaking up on me. In 45 days.

I'm also comforting a sick ferret.

I recently took this picture of Trinket in the backyard. As you can see, our lawn needs to be cut. Again. We've had a lot of rain. One of the few pros of having long grass is watching a very little dog try to hop around in it, smelling flowers and various weeds.

Have a great week, friends!

Still in the planning stages...

Happy Friday! I've been working on our wedding a little, 78 days until the big day! We have our invitations designed (I did them on CS5 *knocking dust of my shoulders*) and they're ready to be sent out for printing. We have deciding where we are having the wedding and we even chose what we wanted to serve. Colors, centerpieces, and favors have been decided. I will wait until our guest start to RSVP before I make the favors, that's what you're supposed to do, right? I've never had a wedding before. We set up our wedding site on weddingwire.com. I felt as though I could navigate through the site better than theknot.com. I also felt as though the site was more DIY friendly, rather than being focused on vendors. That's just my take. Anyhoo, I thought I'd share some of things that have inspired me in planning!

Disney Magic

It's been a while since I've posted anything from our Disney trips, hasn't it? We haven't gone nearly as much because of school and work, but we still go at least once a month. I haven't had the time (still) to go through memory cards and look at real photos, so here are a few fun instagrams in the mean time!

I really like the instagram app, but I've been starting to play around with other apps, too. I ran the sorcerer Mickey photo through a different app first and then applied another filter to it in instagram. Have a great Sundae!
